The Chico is well known as one of the prime birding locations in Colorado. Over 330 species of birds (some rarely seen in Colorado) have been sited on the ranch. The ranch operates a bird banding station during the fall and spring in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory. The ranch maintains a birding trail, outlined on a map that lists the prime birding locations to assist self-guided birders. |

Garden Park Fossil Area is one of the most productive and historically important locations in the United States for the study of Late Jurassic dinosaurs. Fossil hunters and scientists from across the country have dug in Garden Park since 1877, when the nearby town of Cañon City, Colorado was still young. Important discoveries include the first complete skeleton of Allosaurus, some of the most complete Stegosaurus skeletons, as well as the first known remains of dinosaurs like Camarasaurus, Ceratosaurus, and Diplodocus. |

The dinosaur tracks are located in the Purgatoire Valley, called Rio de las Animas Perdidas en Purgatorio or River of Lost Souls. The site of the trackway is named Picket Wire Canyonlands and extends 1/4 of a mile. It is North Americas largest tracksite containing over 1,300 footprints in four different layers of rock. |
